Anastomosis around the elbow joint refers to the network of arteries that ensure continuous blood supply to the elbow and surrounding areas, regardless of the joint's position. This arterial network includes several key arteries:

  • Brachial artery branches: Superior ulnar collateral artery, inferior ulnar collateral artery, deep brachial artery branches.

  • Radial artery branches: Middle collateral artery, radial recurrent artery.

  • Ulnar artery branches: Radial collateral artery, anterior interosseous artery, posterior interosseous artery, interosseous recurrent artery, posterior ulnar recurrent artery, anterior ulnar recurrent artery.

These arteries form connections (anastomoses) that allow blood to flow around the elbow joint, ensuring that the joint receives adequate blood supply even during movement.

Basic Overview of Upper Limb Nerves

The upper limb nerves originate from the brachial plexus, which is a network of nerve fibers that supply motor and sensory innervation to the upper limb. The brachial plexus is formed by the nerve roots C5 to T1 and is divided into five parts: roots, trunks, divisions, cords, and branches.

The five main terminal branches of the brachial plexus are:

  • Musculocutaneous nerve: Supplies the muscles of the anterior compartment of the upper arm and provides sensory innervation to the lateral forearm.

  • Axillary nerve: Provides sensory innervation to the skin over the deltoid muscle and motor innervation to the deltoid and teres minor muscles.

  • Median nerve: Supplies the muscles of the anterior compartment of the forearm, the thenar muscles, and the lateral two lumbricals of the hand.

  • Radial nerve: Innervates the triceps brachii muscle and the extensor muscles of the forearm, and provides sensory innervation to the posterior forearm and part of the hand.

  • Ulnar nerve: Supplies most of the intrinsic muscles of the hand and provides sensory innervation to the little finger and part of the ring finger
